Rajni Rawat joins AAP, to be it's mayoral candidate for Dehradun

Prominent Trans-Woman and social worker Rajni Rawat joined the Aam Aadami Party and was declared as its mayoral candidate  for Dehradun. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Rawat said that if elected to the post of the mayor of Dehradun, she would sweep away the anomalies plaguing the municipal corporation of Dehradun. She would lay special focus on sanitation in the city and elicit votes on the basis of the social work she has done.

Trans-Woman social worker has contested two mayoral polls, one assembly poll in the past.

It is pertinent to mention here that though the AAP has failed to make any political headway in Uttarakhand so far, Rawat had fared better in past mayoral elections than the party she joined on Friday.

Rawat has contested earlier elections for the post of Dehradun mayor in 2008 and 2013.

She had managed to secure a noteworthy proportion of the votes, even securing second position with more than 44,000 votes in the 2008 election.

She had managed to surpass the Congress candidate but lost to the BJP candidate in the 2008 mayoral poll.

She did not fare as well during the 2013 polls. Later, in 2017, she also contested the Vidhan Sabha election from the Raipur constituency in Dehradun.

Observers point out that not having a strong candidate of its own, the AAP may have decided to field Rawat as its candidate in the election to the post of Dehradun mayor considering her past performance in the elections.
